The 13-year-old Australian singer, who was discovered through social media apps Instagram and Musical.ly, releases his long-awaited EP, “Magnetic.” in March 2018.  Mason’s second single, “Counting Down to You,” was released on February 26.

With over 100,000 Instagram followers, Mason continues to enchant listeners and fans with his confident, yet humble, attitude and self-taught musical talent.

Following the release of “Counting Down to You,” Everly Mag talked to Mason all about his new music, his hobbies, and what fans can expect from his EP.

Everly Mag: How old were you when you knew you had a passion for singing?

Mason: Ever since I was very little I was always singing, whether it was singing along in the back of the car, or singing every word to my favorite show’s theme song.  I’ve always loved listening to music and singing songs.  So, I started singing and performing [for] my cousins whenever they came over.

When I was 11 [years old], I began to post short singing covers onto my Instagram and Musical.ly  In the last year or so, I started to gain a large following on my social media accounts.

Everly Mag: Tell us a little bit about your new single, “Counting Down to You.”

Mason: We actually wrote this song on the night of my birthday, finishing the recording at 2 in the morning.  The song is about two people who fell in love after one day, and were split apart because the girl had to move away with her family.  Now, the boy is reflecting on the memories and counting down to the next time they see each other.

Everly Mag: What’s your favorite thing about the song?

Mason: I love this song because it’s very acoustic and stripped down.  I can perform the entire song just with my guitar.

Everly Mag: What should fans expect from the single and the video?

Mason: I’m hoping my audience can be captured by the emotion in the video and the song as it tells a story of young love.

Everly Mag: You’re also releasing an EP this year.  What are you most excited about for this album? What should fans expect to hear?

Mason: The EP will have 5 songs, with a wide range of cool sounds including acoustic guitar, pop, and some dance songs.  I’m excited for the launch of my little brother Jules, who features in one of the songs.  This EP was recorded in the United States.  It was really fun working with different producers and writers in Los Angeles and Nashville.  My music showcases a broad mix [of] styles that I’m sure my fans will love!

Everly Mag: What’s been the best part of being a professional singer as a teen?  What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

Mason: The best part of being a teen singer is having a loyal fan base, and people who are always commenting nice things on my posts!  The biggest challenge would have to be that most of my fans [are] overseas, so I have to work in different time zones.

Everly Mag: Tell us 3 facts about you that might surprise us.

Mason: I’m self taught on the guitar and piano, I have written a lot of my own songs, and my sporting passion is basketball.

Everly Mag: When you’re not busy singing, what do you like to do with your free time?

Mason: I love hanging out with my friends and family.  I’m always playing 1-v-1 basketball games against my little brother Jules in the backyard.  I also love to watch scary movies, even though I get scared really easily and regret watching them [afterward]!
