Bad things happen in threes. It seems like one bad thing can ruin your entire day. But, maybe it isn’t that bad thing that ruins your entire day. Maybe it’s your perspective.

Some people see the glass as half full, and some see it as half empty. It is important to view both sides of a situation. You may have gotten a bad test score, but it is important to not let that one test score to bring you down. Your self worth isn’t determined by one test score. You can either mope about your grade, or view it as a learning experience. By looking on the positive sides of things it can improve your mood. You can’t change the past, so the more time you spend being sad about the past, the less time you have to make good memories for the future. You may think, “Oh it’s easy for you to say to just look on the positive side of things” or “It’s not that easy to look past the negative things.” But once you start looking on the positive sides of things, you will see your mood improve dramatically.

You can start to gain a better outlook on life by keeping the negativity out. Cut out the toxic people in your life that always bring your mood down. People who are always knocking you over don’t need to be a part of your life. You need to have friends to bring you back down to earth when you’re on cloud 9, but you also need people who support you when you accomplish things. If your friends get extremely jealous of you for your accomplishments, then they aren’t your friends. They should be happy for you and your hard work.

Next you can learn to accept the circumstances. You may have gotten a really bad grade, or you didn’t make the soccer team. Don’t be sad. Everything that you do, you learn from it. Even if you get a bad grade, you now know why you have a bad grade. If you didn’t make the soccer team, there’s always next year and you have more time to improve your skills. What happens, happens and you can’t change it. There is nothing useful that comes out of being sad about things that you can’t change. Learn to accept you mistakes so that they don’t repeat in the future.

The next thing you can do is to be grateful. Be grateful for what you have and what you have accomplished. You have a loving family, you have a roof over your head, and the clothes on your back. Some children around the world starve everyday. Some people don’t even have a home to go to. So be grateful that you are alive and healthy. Anything that you are going through will pass and you will be able to get through it.

Another thing you can do is learn to take things slowly. If you are super stressed about everything it is best that you take a couple minutes and plan out what you can do to be less stressed. First take a couple seconds to breathe and calm down. Push things aside for a second and review your mental health. Then, you can slowly refocus your thinking. Take things one step at a time. You can do anything you set your mind to if you just take it one step at a time. Sometimes there are all these “what ifs.” “What if it doesn’t happen?” “What if this happens?” Trying thinking in a different perspective. “What if it does?”

The last thing you can do is to look on the bright side of things. There is always a positive outcome for everything. You may have lost your friend to another friend group, but look on the bright side of it. People change, and maybe your friend wasn’t who you thought they were. You may have gotten an injury and you are unable to play sports or perform. There are lots of hobbies out there that you can try. You can view this situation as a turning point in your life.

Whatever you are going through right now, there will be good outcomes. Things will get better. When you stop seeing the glass as half empty and start seeing it as half full, you are one step closer of gaining a better outlook on life.
